THIRTY-TWO

Sabeara

I followed Dusane up to the deck, and when we reached the top, the wind immediately ruffled my hair, a pleasant scent of salt and brine filling the air.

I walked over to the edge for a moment in my distraction and gazed out in wonder at how fast we seemed to be moving. The sails were holding the wind, sending the ship cutting through the vast blue waves. I gazed out at the horizon and could barely see the speck of land we'd departed from in the distance.

I sighed and turned back to Dusane, who was waiting patiently for me, and together, we walked to the captain's quarters where dinner was being held.

When we stepped inside, laughter and chatter immediately surrounded us.

It was a pretty cramped space, but somehow someone managed to get a large table in the quarters. Food was set out, a mixture of breads, cheeses, and meats. I took a seat by Captain Whitemane, and Dusane sat on my other side. I realized my mistake all too quickly and looked up to find Mid right across from me.

I quickly averted my gaze from his penetrating emerald-scarlet eyes and started putting food on my plate. It looked as if everyone had already started eating.

"Glad you could join us! Tell me again, what is your name, young lady?" Captain Whitemane beside me was clutching a goblet in one hand while resting his leg over the armrest. He looked laid back—casual. He seemed to be drunk too.

"I'm Ehren," I told him while scooping some potatoes onto my plate.

"Well, it's nice to have you onboard," he winked at me, his beautiful white blue eyes shimmering.

"This is a fabulous dinner," Embrosine commented, "Who prepared it?"

"Myself and this lad here." Captain Whitemane reached out and clapped Mid on the shoulder. Mid smiled, but it looked forced.

"Well, it's lovely," Embrosine said.

"Wanted to celebrate the occasion. It's not every day I get to sail on the seas again with one of my greatest friends." Whitemane raised his glass to King Knadian on the other end of the table. The king chuckled and raised his glass in response.

"To all the adventures we had together." King Knadian made a toast, and we all reached out to clink glasses.

Captain Whitemane started telling stories then of being on Knadian's ship when he was just a teenager and how he had taught him everything he knew. I wondered why Knadian had brought him on board the vessel if he'd been the one to teach the Captain and if it really was because he needed help to sail the Diagon. But somehow, I highly doubted that. I couldn't help but wonder if there was another reason that the boisterous Captain was aboard with us.

"So, Captain Whitemane, how long have you been a sea captain?" I asked.

"Please, call me Thane," he said while leaning toward me a tad and flashing a dazzling smile in my direction.

I gave him an incredulous expression and shook my head. "Okay, Thane, how long have you been a sea captain?"

"Going on ten years, little lady.
